Every year on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month Canadians observe Remembrance Day. The red poppy you see above "serves to perpetuate Remembrance by ensuring that the memory and sacrifices of the war veterans are never forgotten." The Royal Canadian Legion holds a campaign each year collecting donations "to ensure that soldiers and their dependents are cared for and treated with the respect that they deserve." Around this time each year you see people all around the city wearing poppies on their jackets. The Legion sends volunteers out all around the city to collect donations - similar to the Salvation Army bell ringers - except without the bell. A couple of weeks ago I asked a co-worker what the pins were and she thought I was crazy (not knowing that I was from The States). I was happy to donate my loonie and equally happy, as you can see above, to wear my red poppy around town.
